About the Item

An unusual and absolutely charming Chinese porcelain turquoise glazed mythical beast, possibly a qilin or a pixiu, very late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China. The strange figure is chimeric, with pawed lions feet, long, floppy goat ears, a pair of curled rams horns, a dog-like face, a mane that morphs into long hackles, and a short forked tail. Crafted in porcelain and glazed all over in a rich and deep turquoise glaze. This odd looking animal may be a qilin, a benevolent and auspicious animal said to appear to herald the arrival or passing of a great leader or sage. However qilin are usually portrayed with cloven hooves. Another mythical beast this may portray is the pixiu, an auspicious animal related to wealth and protection. With two horns, this would be a bixie, the female of the species charged with warding off evil. Marked CHINA in black twice to the underside.
