About the Item

Beautiful in its imperfection, this lidded jar from Yunnan province is an offering vessel, or spirit jar, originally filled with ritual offerings such as coins, shells, flowers and grains. Attributed to the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) or earlier, the terracotta jar is richly aged with visible erosion to the green drip glaze and a texture only time can achieve. Potted to a tapered, ovoid form, the jar is decorated in low relief with an array of Buddhist motifs, including lotus flowers, vajras, Bodhisattvas and animals of the zodiac. Though difficult to discern today, these motifs imbued the jar with symbolism - lotus for purity and enlightenment, vajras for compassion and strength, and the zodiac for devotion and renewal. A fantastic green drip glaze cloaks the exterior, flowing with tonal color variation from earthy brown to olive green. Significant chip to lid.
