About the Item

Beautiful in its imperfection, this green glazed lidded jar from Yunnan province is an offering vessel, or spirit jar, originally filled with ritual offerings such as coins, shells, flowers and grains. Attributed to the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) or earlier, the terracotta jar is richly aged with visible erosion to the glaze and a texture only time can achieve. Potted with an oblong body and a domed lid, the footed jar is decorated with a ruffled trim and low relief lotus blossoms. Because it emerges from the mud of riverbanks as a pristine flower, the lotus is a Buddhist symbol of purity, perfection and transformation. In turn, it represents the path to enlightenment and the potential for spiritual growth. The jar exterior is cloaked in a bright green glaze with mottled color and a matte finish. Strongly influenced by the art styles of southeast Asia, the ritual vessels of Yunnan province are sculptural and unique, imbued with freeform movement and layered with symbolism. Shaped by hand, these 14th c. ceramic forms reveal the artistic skill and creativity of their makers, no two vessels exactly the same. These extraordinary vessels have become eroded by time, today celebrated for their irregular silhouettes and the rare beauty of their natural materials.
