About the Item

Beautiful in its imperfection, this green glazed jar from Yunnan province is an offering vessel, or spirit jar, originally filled with ritual offerings such as coins, shells, flowers and grains. Attributed to the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) or earlier, the terracotta jar is richly aged with visible erosion to the dark green drip glaze and a texture only time can achieve. Potted to a tapered, ovoid form, the jar is decorated with a ruffled trim and molded decoration of lotus flowers and animals of the zodiac. Though difficult to discern today, these Buddhist motifs imbued the jar with symbolism - lotus for purity and enlightenment and the zodiac for devotion and renewal. With origins in ancient Chinese cosmology, the twelve animals of the zodiac are believed to have journeyed to pay their last respects to the historic Buddha before he passed into final nirvana. Split to clay along interior.
