About the Item

An absolutely wonderful assembled group of Chinese Blanc de Chine white glazed porcelain Buddhistic lion (foo lion, foo dog) joss stick holders, Qing Dynasty, late 17th - late 19th centuries, China. This assembled pack of foo dogs are wonderfully charming and expressive. Technically Buddhistic lions (making this group a pride?), they are often referred to as foo lions or foo dogs. They serve as protective beings, and were originally used as joss (incense) stick holders. The joss sticks would have been placed in the cylindrical tubes on the side of each lion. The lions all of similar form and style, yet each seems to have an individual personality. They are portrayed seated firmly upon their haunches on a high rectangular plinth, one forepaw upon a brocade ball. They are alert and playful, with their heads up and slightly turned, mouths open in charming smiles, and looking outwards from comically bulging eyes. Fanciful collars adorn their necks, festooned with bells and ornaments. Some lions hold streamers in their opened mouths. Their manes styled as long tresses to the back of the heads, running down their backs, and ending in bushy tails. The lions glazed in a luminous white glaze on white porcelain, commonly known as blanc de chine. One lion with an off white crackled cream glaze. Measurements for each lion (left to right, back to front): 11.5" H x 3.25" W x 4.5" D 13.5" H x 4" W x 5" D 11" H x 3.5" W x 5" D 11" H x 3" W x 4.5" D 10.25" H x 3.25" W x 4.25" D 7.5" H x 2.5" W x 3.25" D.
