About the Item

Beautiful pair of Dehua white Chinese ceramic statuettes from the beginning of the 20th century which will decorate the windows of the best Chinoiserie lovers. These statuettes represent four of the eight immortals of the Tao. From right to left in the first photo: ZHANG GUO-LAO Zhang Guo-Lao, the Taoist master, is represented with a yugu (musical instrument). He is not only the patron saint of painters and calligraphers, but he also has a special mission to help those who wish to have children. It symbolizes creation and artistic expression, reminding believers of the importance of beauty and procreation in universal harmony. HAN XIANG-ZI Han Xiang-zi, the nephew of the scholar Han Yu, is depicted with a flute and is the patron of musicians. It symbolizes harmony and musical expression, inspiring believers to seek beauty and serenity in music and sound arts, and to create harmony in their surroundings. LAN CAI-HE Lan Cai-he is shown carrying a basket of flowers. It symbolizes joy and appreciation of nature, teaching Tao practitioners the importance of living in the present moment and finding joy in the little things in life. LÜ DONG-BIN Lü Dong-bin is usually depicted with a sword and is considered an alchemist and righter of wrongs. It represents transformation and moral rectitude. His sword symbolizes the ability to cut through illusion and achieve clarity, guiding practitioners of the Tao through life's moral and spiritual challenges. The Eight Immortals were originally mortals who dedicated their lives to fighting evil and pursuing wisdom. hollow mark under the base DIMENSIONS heights: 16 cm and approximately 10.5 x 5 cm GOOD CONDITION with some small gaps at the fingertips of 2 hands which are not too visible
