About the Item
A Fine Japanese Satsuma Vase with Bijin, Peacock, and Chrysanthemums.
Attributed to Kinkozan Workshop, Kyoto, Meiji period (late 19th century)
Of pear-shaped form with a flared foot and slender neck, this finely enamelled and gilt Satsuma vase is richly decorated with continuous figural and floral scenes of exceptional detail.
One side depicts a group of bijin (court ladies) strolling through a lush landscape, accompanied by a child holding a long-handled butterfly net, symbolising playful innocence. The figures are portrayed in softly coloured kimono, delicately patterned and heightened with raised gilding, set against a serene backdrop of misty mountains.
The reverse presents a majestic peacock amongst chrysanthemums and peonies, traditional emblems of beauty, status, and longevity. The lower section is bordered with brocade-style panels and fan-shaped reserves enclosing intricate landscape vignettes, executed with meticulous precision.
The foot is encircled with alternating bands of floral and geometric gilt designs, characteristic of Kyoto Satsuma production
Signature:
The base bears a partially worn black and gilt cartouche, consistent with works from the Kinkozan workshop, Kyoto.
