About the Item
This is one of the most attractive and appealing pieces of pottery that I have ever owned; simply a wonderful work of art for those seeking an unusually designed beautiful bowl. This exquisite vessel is a completely "free formed" bowl with no symmetrical uniformity to it's shape, and it flows beautifully in a curvilinear pattern to both the circumference, and top to bottom. Very sturdy and well balanced on it's base, the bowl is unusually heavy (about 20 pounds), suggesting a dense heavy "paste like" substance was used in the clay mix, consisting of a combination of two materials that are indigenous to Jingdezhen in the Jiangxi provenmce; "Kaolin"; a dense China clay; and "Petontse"; a powder which is made by crushing granite feldspathic rock.
Aesthetically pleasing and a unique touch; there is a perceptual pool of realistic looking emerald green water which has been worked into the base of the interior of the bowl by the potter (very ingenious--see image). The exterior is decorated in shades of brown hand painted images of a pagoda which is hidden behind a forest of trees; there is a boat beneath; and birds in flight above. In addition, there is a raised relief design of mythical Chinese figures to the side; (see images).
As per the markings underneath the bowl, the artist's name is suggested along with the name of the village where he or she lived; that region being Jingdezhen in Jiangxi, China.
Jingdezhen is known as the "porcelain capital" of China and is famous for fine quality ceramic production stretching back 1700 years. The Chinese porcelain industry has, for hundreds of years, been centered in Jingdezhen, attracting the most famous and talented artists China has to offer for nearly two centuries.
Jingdezhen is located along the "silk road", which would have made it an important hub for Chinese global export. Regarding the markings on the underneath; the city of origin is clearly marked, but the exact date of origin is implied through suggestion---- one character translates to "archaized" from the Qing Dynasty, perhaps 1900 to 1912; or maybe stylistic reference, connotating the 1920's. Chinese characters are difficult to discern since many of the markings are interpreted by implication, for example one character on the underneath suggests; "Happiness, Prosperity, and Longevity" which implies a proud Chinese tradition (the Hua character). Judging by my acquisition; in conjunction with the style, and the character interpretations; I feel the bowl was made between 1900-1920.
The condition of the bowl is excellent with no cracks, chips, or restoration of any kind, and no touch up to any of the hand painted design. It is of the finest quality and is fairly large and surprisingly heavy, making it appropriate to place as a dining room table centerpiece, or as a hallway entry table decor item.
This would make a wonderful addition to those who collect and are looking for fine quality art and antiques and crave that which is unique and beautiful. It would fit into almost any decorating scheme and definitely "one of a kind".

View AllVictorian Porcelain Spittoon, circa 1880 by Imari, Japan
Located in Incline Village, NV
The mark on the underneath (see image) indicates that this spittoon is of Japanese Imari porcelain, manufactured circa 1880, and made specifically for the American market for the preponderance of bars and saloons at that time.
These were popular from 1865 to the turn of the century; this is a particularly fancy and elaborate example. Note the copious and highly detailed and beautiful floral decoration to the inside of the upper portion of the spittoon; pretty fancy for something meant for spit and saliva!
Fantastic and all original condition with no cracks, no chips and very bright paint in sharp colors of blue rust and pink, and meticulously painted in a floral pattern. Several of these would have been “stationed” in strategic places within a saloon. This is a wonderful piece of porcelain, and quality item of saloon and Western United States history...
