About the Item
A beautifully handcrafted mizusashi (covered water vessel) by renowned Hagi ware ceramicist Mashita Takashi (b. 1952), exemplifying the warm, tactile aesthetic and quiet refinement for which Hagi-yaki is celebrated. The vessel displays classic features of the tradition — a soft, milky glaze with natural variation, subtle earthy tones, and the characteristic kan’nyū (crackled glaze) that deepens in beauty with age and use.
This piece is accompanied by its original tomobako (signed wooden presentation box), bearing the artist’s seal and handwritten inscription, affirming its authenticity and studio provenance.
About the Artist:
Mashita Takashi trained at the Aichi Prefectural Ceramics Training School and later apprenticed under master potter Odaka Masamine in Hagi, Yamaguchi. In 1980, he established his own kiln in Suita City, Osaka, where he continues to work using a traditional noborigama (climbing kiln). His ceramics are widely respected among collectors and tea practitioners for their honest craftsmanship and poetic material presence. His works have been exhibited at leading venues such as Hankyu Department Store and Gallery Centurion in Osaka.
