About the Item
A striking and impressively sized mid-20th century Chinese flambé-glazed vase, produced in the 1950s by the Jingdezhen Jianguo Porcelain Factory (景德镇建国瓷厂), one of the foremost state-run kilns established in the early years of the People’s Republic of China. This factory was known for supplying high-quality porcelain to senior government institutions and for continuing the tradition of refined, official-style craftsmanship in the modern era.
The vase is masterfully finished in a dramatic flambé / transmutation (yaobian) glaze, displaying cascading streaks of ruby red, lavender, and deep cobalt blue flowing naturally down the body—an homage to classical Qing dynasty Langyao and Jun glazes. The clear glaze exhibits an attractive natural crackle, adding depth, movement, and visual texture to the richly layered colors.
Elegantly potted in a pear-form (yuhuchun) silhouette, the vase rises from a rounded body to a short neck with an everted rim. The base bears a finely written Kaishu-script seven-character mark for the Jingdezhen Jianguo Factory, executed in cobalt blue underglaze, an indication of the high level of artistry associated with this important state workshop.
This piece represents an exceptional example of early PRC porcelain, where traditional techniques and aesthetic sensibilities were carried forward through the craftsmanship of Jingdezhen’s finest artisans. Its impressive size, sophisticated glaze, and clear factory provenance make it a standout display piece for collectors of Chinese ceramics and 20th-century art pottery.
