About the Item

A beautiful Tamba (Tanba) ware (or Sigaraki ware) Japanese pottery vase/jar/pot - produced sometime during the Edo Period (1603-1867). Tamba-yaki ware is a type of Japanese pottery and ceramics produced in Sasayama and Tachikui in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Tamba ware and Shigarakai ware are considered one of the Six Ancient Japanese Kilns (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Tokaname ware, and Bizen ware). This particular piece, commonly referred to as a four ears jar, features a sumptuous natural unique forming organic ash glaze and wonderful texture. The work encompasses the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic (which is so revered and coveted in Japan) - the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in Nature and embraces the principles of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature upon them. From a prominent San Francisco Japanese/ Asian pottery and art collection (the previous owner worked with the San Francisco opera for some 40 years). Truly an engaging piece and perhaps the perfect Ikebana vase. Would be a great addition to any Asian or Japanese pottery/ceramics collection or a clear eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Approximate dimensions: 9" high, 9" diameter
