About the Item

An absolutely stunning, beautifully shaped and textured Shigaraki Yaki-Ware Japanese pottery vase/jar/pot - produced sometime during the late Edo Period (1603-1867) or early Meiji period (1868-1912). Shigaraki ware is a type of Japanese pottery and ceramics produced in the Shigaraki area of Japan. Shigaraki ware is considered one of the Six Ancient Japanese Kilns (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Tamba (Tanba) ware, Tokaname ware, and Bizen ware). This particular piece encompasses the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic (which is so revered and coveted in Japan) - the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in nature and embraces the principles of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature upon them. Truly a beautiful and engaging piece and perhaps the perfect Ikebana vase. Quite heavy and solid. Would be a great addition to any Asian or Japanese pottery/ceramics collection or a make for a clear eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Japanese Glazed Tsubo Wine Jar, c. 1875
Located in Chicago, IL
This large, glazed stoneware vessel is a Meiji-era Japanese storage jar (tsubo) used for storing rice wine, water or even tea leaves and spices. Sometimes referred to as a Martaban jar due to historic trade routes, this style of unrefined, ovoid jar was common throughout East Asia as everyday containers for liquids and foodstuffs. The large vessel is sculpted to a tapered form with broad shoulders, a narrow base, and a constrained neck flanked by two small loop handles. The interior and shoulders are drenched in a thin, iron-rich glaze that imparts a glassy, dark brown finish and drips down the unglazed sides with irregular movement. Beautifully imperfect, the jar's textured finish and subtle asymmetry honors the spirit of wabi-sabi and recalls primitive medieval Japanese...
