About the Item

Graceful Japanese contemporary very large three-piece decorative porcelain lidded vase, extremely intricately hand painted in underglaze cobalt blue on an auspicious double-gourd body, a signed work by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist of the Imari-Arita region of Japan. This artist is the recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional application of gold and platinum on porcelain. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. The artist's profile is available upon request. This graceful vase is the perfect canvas for showcasing a striking karakusa pattern. The auspicious kurakusa (arabesque) pattern is a symbol of long life and prosperity because of its uninterrupted growth. It has been a beloved pattern used by porcelain artists of Imari-Arita region for centuries. The combination of the graceful shape and the striking pattern has created a stunning piece that attracts the viewer to approach it and explore the details of this unique piece. The ornamental porcelain pieces that traveled from the port of Imari to Europe in 17th and 18th century adorned royal palaces and aristocratic mansions, and had a huge influence on producing fine porcelain abroad. The contemporary Imari porcelain in the same graceful and splendid style that fascinated Europe in the 17th century still attracts the hearts with its luxurious charm. This stunning porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 25 in D 9 in “Fired-on gold,” the artist's signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings.
