About the Item

Japanese contemporary gilded and dimpled porcelain vase decorated with "ran" or orchid in green, blue and iron-red, by highly respected master porcelain artist in the Imari-Arita style and the recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and his unique gold and platinum work on porcelain. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain – a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his unique application of platinum and gold on porcelain. His profile is available upon request. "Ran" or orchid with its refined appearence has been among the auspicious "Four Gentlemen" or Four Noble Ones patterns, along with plum blossoms, bamboo and chrysamthemum. It has been depicted by numerous artists in Japan, representing the Four Seasons, orchid representing spring, bamboo representing summer, chrysanthemum representing fall and plum blossom representing winter, symbolizing uprightness, purity, humility, perseverance. "Fired-on gold,” the artist's signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings. In the dimpling process, the unfired porcelain shell is impressed with hundreds of dimples to which gold is applied at the final stage of production. The dimples are designed to accentuate the luster of the precious metals by varying the thickness of application and allowing the cratering to convey a sense of depth. The elegant shape, the dimples and the striking cherry blossoms in red-iron appearing in clusters throughout the vase, make this a truly memorable piece and testimony to his unique gold and platinum work on porcelain. This exceptional gilded porcelain piece comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 6 in D 7 in
