About the Item
A very stylish antique Edo period Japanese blue and white painted porcelain rice dish and cover decorated with watery landscapes dating from around 1850. The bowl is of wide round form and stands raised on a narrow round foot with and unglazed footrim. The bowl has a shaped edge and is hand painted in underglaze blue with a building and boats in a typical oriental watery landscape scene. The pattern is repeated to the inside of the bowl. The bowl has a cover which rests neatly over the lip and is formed as a shallow bowl or plate with a similar unglazed foot rim to the bowl. It is obviously intended to be used to serve the contents of the bowl and is similarly painted in underglaze blue with the same pattern as the bowl which is repeated to both sides of the cover. The bowl and cover also has a slight celadon tinge to the glazed finish and neither piece is marked.
Acquired from the Helen Espir Collection through the UK Art Market.
In good condition with wear associated with age and use.
