About the Item
A stylish Japanese antique Kutani candlestick hand-painted with birds dating from the Meiji period 1868-1912. The porcelain candlestick stands on a wide rounded base with a narrow tall central round knop stem with looped handles applied either side of the lower stem. The top has a slightly wider cup shape candle holder with a flat rounded rim. The candlestick has a low relief textured patterned design applied around the base and to the stem and is hand painted with a flock of sea birds flying above waves with brown painted handles and foot rim and with Kutani red patterning to the knop and candle holder. The pattern is embellished with gilding. The candlestick has an underglaze blue three-character mark to the base.
Provenance: From the collection of a gentleman and acquired from the UK Art Market
The candlestick is offered in good condition with some gilding rub around the top rim.
