About the Item
A quite beautiful, expertly crafted, sumptuously glazed large Japanese Mashiko Ware Mingei (folk craft/folk art) pottery plate/ charger quite similar to the works of master potter Shoji Hamada. The piece features a coveted rich Kakiyu Kaki persimmon glaze that Hamada was famed for. It radiates in the light.
Mashiko ware (益子焼, Mashiko-yaki) is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally made in Mashiko, Tochigi. The clay used in Mashiko ware is rich in silicic acid and iron with a high plasticity, making it easy to shape and highly fire-resistant. During the Showa Era, Shoji Hamada and Tatsuzō Shimaoka, both renowned potters and each Japanese Living National Treasures, set up kilns and worked in Mashiko.
The piece is signed on the underside with an impressed maker's mark.
This plate is from a fine Southern California/Los Angeles Japanese/Asian ceramics collections.
A wonderful and engaging work. Striking really. Would be a great addition to any Japanese pottery or art collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent piece in about any setting.

A truly gorgeous, sumptuously, richly, and darkly glazed, hand-decorated large Japanese studio pottery charger. The craftsmanship is exquisite. The piece radiates in the light and features an abstract trailed glaze design. The work is very reminiscent of Japanese master potters Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu (the previous owner lived half of each year in Hawaii where Toshiko lived and collected both her and Hamada's works).
Possible marker's impressed mark/ chop signature along the edge of the lower rim (please see photos).
Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian pottery/ ceramics...
