About the Item
An unusual and finely made vintage Japanese unglazed pottery figure of a pedlar being stung by a wasp dating from the 20th century. The figure is seated on a rectangular mat and is dressed in traditional wear with a loosely fitted top embroidered to the back and tied with a belt around his waist and wears a pair of short length loosely fitting trousers with his hair tied. He grimaces as a large wasp has landed on his head and appears to have kicked over a basket with his wares spread over the mat. The hand-crafted figure is lightly made in clay and has not been glazed and the figure has an impressed seal mark to the base.
Provenance: acquired from the British Art market.
In good condition with light wear and small chip to the rim of the basket.
