About the Item

A truly breathtaking work by renowned Japanese born ceramic master Jun Kaneko. Kaneko studied with Peter Voulkos, Paul Soldner, and Jerry Rothman and was exposed to such artist as Ken Price and John Mason in California during the time now defined as the contemporary ceramics movement before finally settling permanently in America. This large, heavy sculptural charger (or "Ovals" as he is inclined to call them) displays a solid, rich plum color with a single dark off-center circle and a splash of crimson color to add balance. The work is signed and dated (1982) on the verso by Kaneko. The piece can be displayed flat or hung on a wall. It would be the crown jewel of any Japanese or Contemporary Modern pottery collection or rivetting stand-alone work and would most certainly give years of aesthetic pleasure. Kaneko's work can be found in prominent collections and international museums including: Aichi-Prefecture Museum of Ceramics Arabia Museum, Helsinki, Finland Banff Centre of Fine Arts, Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff, Canada California State University, Sacramento, California Cranbrook Academy of Art/Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan De Young Museum, San Francisco, California Detroit Institute of Art European Ceramic Work Centre, s’Hertogenbosch, Netherlands Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, San Francisco, California Gifu-Ken Museum, Gifu, Japan Honolulu Academy of Art, Honolulu, Hawaii Japan Foundation, Tokyo, Japan Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, Nebraska The Marer Collection at Scripps College, Claremont, California Museum of Arts and Design, New York, New York Museum Het Kruithis, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands Museum of Contemporary Art, Honolulu, Hawaii The Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu, Japan The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama, Japan Nagoya City Art Museum, Nagoya, Japan Northern Arizona State University, Flagstaff, Arizona Oakland Museum, Oakland, California Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Scripps College, Claremont, California Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Lincoln, Nebraska Shigaraki Ceramic Museum, Shigaraki, Japan Smithsonian National Museum of American Art, Renwick Gallery Takamatsu City Art Toyota City Museum, Toyota, Japan Webber State University, Ogden, Utah Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Arts, Yamaguchi, Japan Dimensions: 21" high, 25.25" wide, 3" deep Approximate weight: 30 pounds.

Large Japanese Pottery Charger in the Manner of Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly gorgeous, sumptuously, richly, and darkly glazed, hand-decorated large Japanese studio pottery charger. The craftsmanship is exquisite. The piece radiates in the light and features an abstract trailed glaze design. The work is very reminiscent of Japanese master potters Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu (the previous owner lived half of each year in Hawaii where Toshiko lived and collected both her and Hamada's works). Possible marker's impressed mark/ chop signature along the edge of the lower rim (please see photos). Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian pottery/ ceramics...
