About the Item
An understated and very heavily potted celadon glazed Korean ritual ewer or water sprinkler, kundinka, Goryeo Dynasty, 13th-14th century.
The unusual bottle vessel, used as a water sprinkler for Buddhist rituals, is crafted of a heavy stoneware and generously glazed. The glaze of a dreamy, unctuous, streaked celadon with blue, green, cream and even red tones.
The ritual ewer, called a kundika, is used as a water sprinkler or pouring vessel in certain Buddhist rituals. The form is an ancient one, originally imported into Korea from India by way of China, where ceramic and bronze ones start appearing in the Tang Dynasty.
The bottle or ewer has a distinctive form, with a wide body rising to sharp shoulders and a stout neck, bulging in the center before continuing upwards, narrowing to a spout or nozzle. A single hole to control the flow of the water out the spout has been placed where the shoulder and neck meet.
