About the Item
A large Chinese Qing dynasty porcelain wucai (five color) glazed bowl painted in underglaze blue and overglaze red, green, and yellow upon a pure white ground, and featuring a design of dragons to both the exterior and interior. An apocryphal "Da Ming Wanli Nian Zhi" mark in kaishu script within a double circle to the recessed foot.
The exterior design of two long, sinuous opposing dragons, one red, the other green, reaching out towards the flaming pearl of wisdom centered between them. Their writhing bodies fly amongst a sky filled with colored clouds and flames above a sea of crashing waves. A red leiwen border to the foot.
The interior of the bowl features a single roundel to the well of the bowl, centered on a facing red dragon coiled around the flaming pearl, also surrounded by multicolored clouds and flames. The lip of the bowl with a band of leiwen in an alternating blue and red.
Modeled after a Ming dynasty Wanli period (1596 to 1630) design, this bowl was created in the 19th century, during the later part of the Qing dynasty. The apocryphal mark should be regarded as an honorific mark.
