About the Item
An Imperial Japanese Satsuma Charger
By Masanobu, Meiji era
Of large circular form, the wide rim lavishly decorated in raised polychrome enamels and gilt with a continuous border of Imperial chrysanthemums (kiku) in full bloom, interwoven with scrolling foliage picked out in turquoise, iron-red, and pale pink against a rich cobalt ground, the petals and leaves finely detailed and richly gilt to convey depth and luminosity. The central well left undecorated in restrained elegance, highlighting the opulence of the border. The reverse bearing the Shimazu clan crest in blue above a gilt inscription Dai Nippon Satsuma-yaki Masanobu with a red seal.

In very good condition commensurate with age, no damage or restoration observed.
