Large Islamic Pottery Bowl with incision and Slip Paint

About the Item

A large earthenware bowl with a deep and wide body supported on a foot ring decorated with incision and slip paint circa 11-12th from Iran when it was under the rule of Seljuk Empire. This bowl features a thinly pottered wall which is covered in tight decoration demarcated with incised design and in fill with slip paint of various colors. In the center medallion, there is a side silouette of bird. The motif was popular in earlier Nishapur buff wares. The medallion was encircled with a geometrical patterned band, incised and filled with a green color slip. On the outer portion of the wall, ocher color slip was used to fill in what appears to be Kufic characters radiating and elongated from the center. They could also be a design inspired by the archaic writings for pure decorative purpose. In between, incision lines delineated small cloud shape and the spaces were then filled with incised dots with white slip. The outer rim was again incised with scroll pattern and painted in green slip. A nice patina and scattered flaking from the age renders this bowl a great antique appearance as the surface slip paint remains nearly intact. Under UV light, the bowl shows a structural integrity and not restored from fragment. There are some scattered small in-paints in the interior but when the touch up was performed can't be determined. Similar Iranian bowls with incision and slip deigns are illustrated on page 256-259 in "Ceramic from Islamic Lands" by Oliver Watson.
