About the Item

This magnificent large Japanese charger dates to the Meiji period (1868–1912) and is a striking example of Imari ware executed in a rare famille noire palette. The front is richly decorated with an elaborate arrangement of hand-painted folding fans (sensu), each featuring traditional motifs such as flowering branches, bamboo, landscape scenes, and symbolic seasonal elements. The deep black ground is embellished with intricate scrollwork, creating a dramatic contrast to the soft pastel tones and vivid coral red of the individual fan panels. The reverse features small hexagonal reserves with floral motifs and a single hand-painted mark in iron red. The piece demonstrates excellent craftsmanship, characteristic of high-quality Meiji-period export porcelain, and remains highly decorative as a wall display or table centrepiece. A wonderful collector’s item combining Japanese artistry, symbolism, and the refined aesthetics of late 19th-century Imari porcelain.
