About the Item
A finely modeled and vividly enameled Chinese export style porcelain figure of a rooster, dating to the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period, circa 1880–1920. The rooster stands alert on a tree-stump form base glazed in pale aubergine and pierced with ventilation holes, suggesting its original use as a joss stick or incense holder. The body is naturalistically painted in a soft white glaze with fine combed incised lines simulating feathers, heightened by subtle gray washes across the wings and tail. The comb and wattles are painted a deep iron-red enamel, with further yellow detailing to the beak and legs. The large, prominent eyes are rendered in a manner typical of Chinese ceramic animal figures from the period.
Rooster figures of this type, often produced in southern Chinese kilns such as those in Guangdong province, were popular export wares for both religious and decorative purposes. Their symbolism as auspicious guardians and emblems of vigilance made them especially suitable for temple and household altars. The pierced base allows for the insertion and burning of incense, making this not merely a sculptural object but one imbued with ritual utility.
