About the Item

An impressive and monumental Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase dating from the Meiji period (late 19th to early 20th century), elaborately hand-painted with gilt and enamel decoration throughout. Standing approximately 33½ inches tall and 13½ inches wide at its broadest point, this extraordinary piece features a large guardian Shishi (Foo Dog) finial seated atop a domed cover, its paw resting on a reticulated ball — symbolizing protection and power. The body of the vase is richly decorated with figural scenes of scholars and immortals, surrounded by intricate floral and geometric borders in soft polychrome enamels accented with fine gilt detailing. The overall composition displays meticulous brushwork and exceptional craftsmanship characteristic of high-quality Meiji-era Satsuma ware. The piece separates into three sections — base, main body, and lid — each carefully matched in design. Condition is consistent with age: there are some chips and losses to the Shishi lion’s tail and ear tips, and an old firing line visible through the glaze, but the vase remains stable and displays beautifully. A rare and decorative statement piece ideal for collectors of Japanese Meiji art, Satsuma pottery, or Asian export ceramics.
