About the Item

A wonderful and quite large Modern studio pottery charger/bowl/wall relief sculpture by Japanese-American master potter Masuo Ojima. The texture and bold colors are amazing. The Modernist designed piece has a wire attached to the back for hanging on a wall to display. From a California collection. The work is signed on the underside of the base by Ojima. Masuo Ojima is from the Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan. He was born in 1949 into a household of traditional craftsmen (his father was a cabinet maker and his grandfather worked with clay tiles). He migrated to the United States eventually settling in Los Angels where he currently lives and works today. An impressive work in both size and artistic scope. Would be a great addition to any collectors of his work or Japanese Asian ceramics/pottery or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Ojima's work can be found in numerous collections and museums worldwide including the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Italy, the Kentucky Museum of Art Craft, Louisville KY, and the Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clarita, CA. Large Japanese Pottery Charger in the Manner of Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly gorgeous, sumptuously, richly, and darkly glazed, hand-decorated large Japanese studio pottery charger. The craftsmanship is exquisite. The piece radiates in the light and features an abstract trailed glaze design. The work is very reminiscent of Japanese master potters Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu (the previous owner lived half of each year in Hawaii where Toshiko lived and collected both her and Hamada's works). Possible marker's impressed mark/ chop signature along the edge of the lower rim (please see photos). Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian pottery/ ceramics...
