About the Item

An elegant early Japanese ceramic vase hand made by Ono Hakuko using the Yuri-Kinsai technique of applying gold leaf to the body of the porcelain vessel and then delicately covering it with a thin layer of glaze. Colors of various shades of green, blue-green and teal add a tranquil zen like appearance. About the artist - Ono Hakuko 1915-1996 was a celebrated Japanese ceramic artist who received the prestigious Japan Ceramic Society Prize in 1980. The Yuri-kinsai technique - Ono Hakuko was a master of yuri-kinsai, a difficult and meticulous technique requiring great skill that involves applying cut gold leaf under a clear or light-colored glaze. The results are a mesmerizing depth to the ceramic object almost resembling glass. In addition Ono Hakuko was a pioneering figure in ceramics. At a time when the world of ceramics was dominated by men, her success helped pave the way for a new generation of female artists.
