About the Item

A subtle and finely potted seihakuji glazed vase by Japanese contemporary ceramicist Ono Kotaro (b. 1953), circa 2000. Ono Kotaro is known for balancing movement and tension within his works. The hardness of the porcelain is balanced out by the soft seihakuji glaze. The rigid body of the vase is given movement by the undulating carved lines. The light, subtle glaze deepens in color as it pools. The visual smoothness of the glaze broken by the delightful bubbles just under the surface. The unctuous nature of the seihakuji glaze, and true color can be seen on the bottom of the vase, where the glaze has pooled considerably. The vase with a fine white porcelain body of ovoid form, carved and decorated with an undulating pattern in the shinogi technique, and glazed all over with an exquisite seihakuji glaze of dreamy pale blue green. Signed with an incised signature to the bottom reading "Ko". The vase with the original storage box, tomobako, with a signed, sealed and titled cover. The cover signed and sealed with the artist's signature on the bottom left. The right reading "Seihakuji" (Qingbai glaze) and "Kun" (vase). Measurements of vase only: H 9.25", D 6.25" Ono Kotaro (b. 1953) is a well respected ceramicist, known particularly for his works in hakuji and seihakuji, his works are exquisitely glazed, and display a strong sense of movement. His works have been sold at Christie's, exhibited at the Met, and are currently in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
