About the Item
A charming and delightful matched pair of recumbent Chinese Export porcelain foo lions or foo dogs, famille verte enameled biscuit porcelain and carved hardwood stands, mid 20th century or earlier, China.
The mirrored pair of playful foo lions or foo dogs are portrayed in a recumbent position, resting on their bellies, paws outstretched, heads up and turned to face the viewer. Their cheerful faces are centered around large, toothy smiles with slightly panting tongues, and feature flat noses, bulging eyes, bushy brows, and floppy ears. Long, wavy tresses make up the mane, scruff, tail, and legs.
The lions are glazed all over in famille verte (green family) palette of enamels, with aubergine bodies, green hair, and yellow ears. The paws, teeth, and whites of the eyes unglazed, revealing the bright white of the biscuit porcelain. The underside unglazed.
The lions presented on custom fitted carved hardwood stands.
