About the Item
A charming and delightful pair of Kutani glazed porcelain models, okimono, of Mandarin ducks, oshidori, Showa Era, circa 1930's, Japan.
The two Mandarin ducks, called oshidori in Japan, are modeled individually and presented as a mated pair, with one female and one male. The slightly larger male with an impressive crest upon his head, his wings raised and tail fanned out in a courtship display. The female demurely portrayed, with her wings tucked against her plump body.
The oshidori of similar coloration of vibrant and deep yellows, blues, greens, and aubergine.
The underside of each bird with an impressed "Kutani" mark, and an artist's signature in red.
Oshidori are auspicious animals in Japan, and Asia in general. Because they are thought to mate for life, they are symbols of fidelity and happy marriages. The term "oshidori fufu" refers to a happily married couple.
Okimono are Japanese decorative objects and sculpture meant to be displayed and admired.
