About the Item

A stunning and rare to find pair antique Indian Multani hand painted portrait plaques originating from Jaipur and dating from the 19th Century. The earthenware plaques are thickly made and of oval shape with a flat base and rounded edge with a painted leaf pattern forming a frame around the raised central portrait, one of a man in traditional dress holding a sword and a rifle and another of similar style with a man smoking a pipe. Both are well painted in tones of blue and turquoise on a white glazed ground. Both have unglazed bases with indistinct painted markings. Provenance: acquired in the UK Art Market. Offered in good presentable condition with wear and old chipping around the lower edge. One with a small blown firing hole to the raised edge and both with light surface staining and wear associated with pieces of this age.
