About the Item
An excellent antique pair of Blanc de Chine or Dehua kiln Chinese porcelain vases, circa early Republic period from 1910s to 1920s. Incredible latticework pattern, the very intricacy of which is emblematic of Dehua porcelain. Each vase is decorated with intricately knotted lattice patterns as well as a wider endless rope twist pattern; the eternal knot is an auspicious symbol in Buddhism symbolizing the cycle of life and karma. The baluster shaped vases are glazed white kaolin porcelain, which is again signature to Dehua kiln work. Blanc De Chine was particularly desired during the Republic period and is enjoying a resurgence in popularity again.
Dehua ceramics, also known as Blanc de Chine, are a type of porcelain that originated in the Dehua County of Fujian province in China. They have a long history, dating back to the Song Dynasty, but reached their peak of production and popularity during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties.
Dehua ceramics are known for their white colour and delicate, smooth texture. They were primarily used for religious and ceremonial purposes, such as the production of statues of Buddhist deities and incense burners. They were also used to create a wide range of decorative items, including vases, bowls, and figurines.
Dehua ceramics were highly valued in China and were also exported to other parts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas. They were particularly popular in Japan and Southeast Asia, where they were used to decorate temples and palaces.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Dehua ceramics were widely considered to be the best quality porcelain in the world and were highly sought after by European traders and collectors.
