About the Item
This richly decorated pair of porcelain vases exemplifies the ornate style of Chinese export wares from the late Qing dynasty, likely produced in the final quarter of the 19th century. Executed in the Famille Rose palette, each baluster-form vase is adorned with polychrome enamel scenes of courtly figures engaged in leisurely activities within architectural and garden settings, bordered by intricate scrolling foliage in emerald green and iron red.
Alternating with these figural panels are complementary cartouches containing birds perched amid peonies and auspicious flora, symbolizing beauty, prosperity, and harmony. The raised molded decoration at the shoulder includes gilt-accented foo lion mask handles and trailing faux-ring lugs, adding sculptural dimensionality and visual drama. The pronounced flaring rims are similarly decorated with figures within domestic interiors and bordered by stylized lotus scrolls.
The enamel work is finely detailed, with particular attention to facial expressions and textile patterns, reflecting the high standard of decorative porcelain intended for Western markets. The unmarked bases, typical of export wares from this period, feature slightly concave foot rings with kiln grit remnants, further supporting their 19th-century origin.
These vases are exemplary of the fusion between Chinese decorative traditions and Western demand for colorful, narrative ceramics during the height of the export porcelain trade. Their symmetry and mirror-like pairing suggest they were produced as a matching set for mantel or cabinet display.

Pair of Chinese Famille Rose Rouleau Vases, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes.
These rouleau-shaped vases date to the early 20th century and beautifully showcase the intricate decoration characteristic of famille rose ware. Also known as bangchuping (纹棒槌瓶), or 'grain mallet vase', rouleau vases...

Pair of Petite Chinese Famille Rose Longevity Vases, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Unusual for the petite size, this pair of vases is a beautiful example of famille rose enamelware, also known as fencai ware, meaning "powdery color." Manufactured in the Qing court’s imperial workshops, this technique of overglazing porcelain with enamel gets its name from the white, opaque enamels used to create color gradients and a soft, pastel effect.
Each vase depicts a meeting of Shoulao, the God of Longevity...
