About the Item

This is a fine pair of Chinese porcelain elephants, dating from the late Qing to early Republic period (early 20th century). Each elephant is beautifully handcrafted and painted with blue and white saddle panels featuring traditional Chinese geometric and floral patterns. The combination of the warm tan-brown glaze with contrasting cobalt blue saddles gives these figures a strong decorative presence and artistic harmony. Both elephants are finely modeled with well-defined forms — the trunks slightly curled, the tusks intact, and the expressions natural and balanced. The glaze application is smooth and glossy, with delicate tonal variation showing the artisan’s attention to detail. Each measures approximately 7½ inches long, 6 inches tall, and 5½ inches wide, making them ideal for display on a mantle, console, or within a fine porcelain collection. The condition is excellent, with no chips, cracks, or restorations. The surfaces are clean and well-preserved, showing only very minor wear consistent with age. Pieces like these are symbolic in Chinese art — elephants represent strength, wisdom, and prosperity, often displayed in pairs to promote balance and harmony. This is an authentic period pair, not a modern reproduction, and a wonderful example of Republic-era Chinese craftsmanship blending Qing Dynasty tradition with early modern porcelain artistry.
