About the Item

In this listing you will find a pair of stunning Chinese Qingbai urns (or vases) in glazed ceramics dated to the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD). The term qingbai translates to "green-white" (or yingqing, "shadowy blue") and refers to the characteristic pale, translucent blue-green glaze resulting from a small amount of iron in the porcelain fired in a reducing atmosphere. These wares were mass-produced in southern China, primarily at Jingdezhen, for burial purposes and export, rather than for the imperial court. The urns were placed in tombs, particularly for the wealthy in Southern China, to hold offerings such as grain for the afterlife, reflecting the importance of the afterworld in ancient Chinese belief systems. They were intended to house the soul of the deceased and were usually created in pairs. The tall, narrow necks are decorated with applied and molded figures in high relief, which attests to Daoist and Buddhist conceptions of the universe. The urns are in good condition, with some signs of time and use, such as small chips. When purchased the vases will be carefully wrapped up and packed in a way to avoid any damages in transport. As soon as shipped you will receive the tracking number for your package. If you have any additional questions regarding this piece please feel free to contact me. Happy shopping!
