About the Item

A fabulous pair of small Chinese molded and glazed biscuit ware porcelain dragon vases with loose eyes and apocryphal Qianlong mark, Republic Period, circa 1920, China. The small vases of traditional "hu" form, with a wide, bulbous body, thick neck, and splayed foot. The biscuit porcelain body carved, over molded, and glazed in turquoise, puce, blue, and yellow. The body featuring a roundel to either side molded in high relief with a wild dragon with "loose eyes". The eyes modeled separately, and move, much like googly eyes. Above the dragon roundels is a scroll tied with streaming ribbons. A pair of puce glazed ruyi shaped handles connect the neck and shoulder. Suspended from the handles are bats and shou (longevity) medallions. The neck decorated with a leiwen (key fret) border. The splayed foot decorated with a crashing wave pattern. The underside of the vases with an apocryphal impressed "Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhu" mark in yellow, and a "CHINA" mark in red paint.
