About the Item
This globular jar of a large size is traditionally called a Hu. Created in the Han dynasty and fully authenticated by the Chinese Government for the collective Group “Hong Kong Art Craft Merchants Association Limited” The group pays for authentication and for export licenses required to remove antiquities out of the country for sale into western markets. Photographed and with a certificate stamp stating this left the country in 1999. Under the Han rule life and prosperity flourished. The production of pottery was greatly increased and standardized making it a staple throughout the country and was used in many ritual burials. Techniques and glaze standards rose. This piece is both incised and has a lovely large banded area of light olive green glaze with a straw glazed top and bottom. Most likely made in the western part of China from the look, glaze color and body surface. These clays require high firing temp. and result in impurities in the clay and fire ash creating these molted effects on the surface.. Further decorated with T'ao T'ieh masks and flat attached ring handles this is a nice Fine example of wears made almost two thousand years ago. Since its importation to this country a fine late 19th century rosewood carved base has been acquired to further display the piece to its maximum advantage.

Chinese Arcaistic Style Cast Bronze Lidded Urn with Carved Jade Finial
Located in Hudson, NY
This very finely cast bronze urn in an archaistic form was made in the very late 19th century approximately 1895-1900. Done with an apocryphal feeling to honor the ancient past, the vase is beautifully rendered in low relief in bronze covering almost the entire body of the urn. The predominant features are the divided taotie masks that compose the swelling middle body of the vase and also at the corners of the upper section. Crisp but subtle, the casting is clearly handled with great attention to linear form. The patina is very nice and consists of a modeled golden brown with a slight but very lite Verdigris color. The urn has an old rosewood base and lid that seems to have been purpose made for the object. Finally, the whole is set off with a carved jade finial...
