About the Item
A small blue and white bird-feeder of circular form with short neck, one side set with two small loup handles, the base slightly pointed, painted with lotus heads growing from scrolling stems with curled leaves between a double-line border encircling the base and a border of stiff leaves around the short neck, circa 1640.
This bowl was part of a hoard recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher from the wreck of a ship that sunk in the South China sea in approximately 1643. Approximately 25,000 pieces from that shipment were sold at auction at Christies Amsterdam in 1984, which Sam and Myrna Myers attended. Most of these pieces were tableware in the Dutch taste, known as "Kraak" porcelain, but they decided to focus on the Transitional ware pieces, which reflected more purely Chinese taste and to select the most rare and unique porcelain. The Transitional period, which took place between the Ming and Qing dynasties, and which ran from the beginning of the 17th century until approximately 1660, marked a shift in Chinese ceramic styles as the pieces became more original, poetic, and more freely drawn than those made in the official kilns.
While there were over 22,178 pieces of porcelain recovered from the shipwreck, there were only 13 bird feeders, making these some of the rarest types of porcelain found on that ship.
