About the Item

A rare pair of blue and white globular teapots with covers from the Hatcher Collection, painted with a variety of scenes. The teapots have short upright necks and cylindrical spouts, painted in a soft blue tone with double line globed ogival panels depicting figures in various pursuits, one with visitors kneeling in front of a dignitary, the other with armed warriors, the loop handle with formal scrolls, the cover with knob finial encircled by flower scrolls, Xuande six character mark. These teapots were part of a hoard recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher from the wreck of a ship that sunk in the South China sea in approximately 1643. Approximately 25,000 pieces from that shipment were sold at auction at Christies Amsterdam in 1984, which Sam and Myrna Myers attended. This pair of teapots is quite unusual: out of over 22,000 pieces of porcelain recovered from the shipwreck, only 24 were this style of teapot. Provenance: Christie's Amsterdam, Hatcher Cargo, March 14, 1984, lot no. 64 (one of the teapots is pictured on p. 9 of the catalog).
