Satsuma covered box, porcelain, Japan, late 19th century late 19th-early 20th century South of Japan, Satsuma Porcelain and polychrome enamels, partial gilding This lovely covered box with a white background comes from the Satsuma ovens. Satsuma porcelain with white decoration is called "gold brocade" and is characterized by an egg shell color paint with a transparent glaze. The belly of the vase is decorated with an ornate decoration with numerous gold highlights and reliefs. The interior is not neglected and offers just as much interest as it is neat. The interior and exterior represent scenes from daily life in Japan and probably an assembly of sages or deities inside the box facing an aristocratic family whose one member is in armor. The department of Kagoshima (formerly the fiefdom of Satsuma) is located at the southern tip of Japan. This region was part of a privileged maritime traffic zone that was largely open to foreigners. It played a major role in trade and commerce with other countries. Satsuma earthenware was born in 1598 under the influence of a great Japanese lord named Shimazu Yoshihihiro whose intention was to establish a local pottery industry on the territory of Satsuma. Satsuma's ceramics originate from techniques imported from the Korean peninsula. Satsuma's ceramics were first presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867. Their finesse and sumptuous decorations fascinated Europe and ensured their fame in the West. The characteristic feature of Satsuma ceramics is the diversity of styles and shapes, ranging from tea ceremony objects to majestic polychrome enamels enhanced with gold. The latter characterize the style called "Satsuma de brocart d'or" (Nishiki-de), due to the richness of the ornaments and the systematic use of rich colors and golden or silvery lines. This style was the most famous and most requested by Western countries at the end of the 19th century. This piece is a true manifesto of the technical perfection achieved by Satsuma's ceramists. The subtle work of the glaze and enamels transcribes with an almost perfect illusion the interplay of materials: the thickness of the embroidered motifs, the texture of the skin, the softness of the beard, which gives the representation a charming spontaneity.
