Satsuma Plate Decorated with Animated Characters, Japan

About the Item

Large Satsuma plate decorated with polychrome and gold enamels representing animated characters including a dignitary separating two warriors (samurai) with shaggy hair arguing. In the background, the wife and daughter of the dignitary are calmly observing the scene. There are several other small moving figures surround the main scene. The edges of the plate are decorated with geometric patterns of an extreme finesse. The plate has a mark under the base. A wall hanging system suitable for the plate is also provided. Satsuma earthenware was born in 1598 under the influence of Shimazu Yoshihiro, a great Japanese lord, who intended to establish a local pottery industry in the Satsuma territory. For more than four hundred years, the potters of Satsuma developed original earthenware techniques to make it one of the greatest references of Japanese ceramics. Most of the Satsuma ceramics evoke white paste pieces with polychrome decorations enhanced with gold. Its decoration, worked very finely, can be very busy thanks to the use of gold in large quantities. Geometric and abstract forms are combined with realistic illustrations such as flowers or birds. The human figure is also very commonly used in a style close to the prints. The consecration of Satsuma earthenware began when it was exported to Western countries. It was in the 19th century that Satsuma porcelain was introduced to the West, especially through the World Fairs. Today, Satsuma ceramics are still produced and include a large number of techniques and potters located in Kagoshima Prefecture. Fin XIX° period, Circa 1890.
