About the Item

Set of four snuff bottle made in the early 20th century Porcelain, colored glass and onyx (one plug is in onyx, please see photos). various dimensions: between 2.76 in. and 1.97 in. high (5 to 7 cm). Decoration inspired by nature: flowers, grapes and grasshopper, butterflies, fishes. Snuff was introduced to China from Italy during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and became very popular in China, particularly among the upper class. At first, people carried their snuff in imported snuffboxes. Then, as humidity was higher in China than in Europe, the Chinese upper class used small glass bottles as substitutes, which at the time were used to hold medicines. Eventually, highly hermetic urn-shaped containers were designed to prevent expensive snuff from becoming moist. At first, this shape became the prototype of the snuffbox and, after reaching its apogee under the Qing dynasty (1636-1912), its character changed from a portable vessel to one rivaling art. Snuffboxes were made of ceramics such as white porcelain, ivory or enamelled glass. Snuffboxes were also used as diplomatic souvenirs in foreign countries, due to their value as expensive objets d'art at the time. The retro Chinese snuffbox influenced perfume bottles in Europe, and its shape continues to this day.
