About the Item
This grand, earthenware jar is a 19th-century storage vessel from Myanmar or Thailand, drenched with dark brown glaze and decorated with a button pattern of raised lines and dots. Sometimes referred to as a Martaban jar due to historic trade routes, this style of unrefined, ovoid jar was common throughout southeast Asia as a durable container for wine, ferments or other foodstuffs.
The large jar has a tapered silhouette, potted with a narrow base, broad shoulders and a wide mouth finished with a short lip. Three small frogs cling to the jar's shoulders, carrying blessings for good luck, wealth and fertility. Due to the frog's association with water and rainfall, it's likely this jar was originally used outdoors to collect and store rainwater.
