About the Item
A wonderfully decorated and executed large Mingei pottery plate/charger by Japanese National Treasure Mashiko-yaki ceramic master Tatsuzo Shimaoka. This work exhibits his signature rope and slip inlay (Zogan-Sara inlaid pottery plate) in a circular pattern with plum decoration and displays his impressed "Ta" signature on the base (partially hidden under the sumptuous back glaze which is quite something).
The piece comes with his signed and sealed original wood storage box.
A very decorative, finely detailed piece. It is exquisite in every way and has a wonderful feel/ heft to it. It is without question one of the better pieces of Shimaoka's we have come across in some time.
Shimaoka, who started as an apprentice to famed Japanese potter Shoji Hamada in 1946 before opening his own studio, has exhibited worldwide including in North America, Asia, and Europe. In 1996 he was bestowed the title of Japanese Living Treasure by the Japanese government. In 1999 he was awarded The Order of the Rising Sun.
His work can be found in many international museums and collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London among others.
Would be sure to stand out in any Asian/Japanese art or pottery collection or serve as an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
