About the Item

A striking Japanese Kutani ware "Poppies" bottle vase by Tokuda Yasokichi I (1873 - 1956), Meiji to Taisho Period, circa 1915, Japan. The attractive vase is decorated with a bold design of sensuous and sinuous stalks of poppies, heavy with blooms and pods. The design's lyricism strongly influenced by both the Kano School and the Art Nouveau movement. The poppy flowers, depicted in an enthusiastic full bloom, are glazed in a fantastic deep golden yellow and contrasting burgundy red. The stalks in a pleasingly bright turquoise green. All set against a deep and rich aubergine purple ground. The underside of the vase glazed in transparent white. A green cartouche bearing the mark of Tokuda Yasokichi I and Kutani to the center of the recessed foot. The vase of attractive bottle form, with a slightly tapered body, wide, sloped shoulders, a short neck, and everted cup mouth. All set on a recessed foot. The mastery of the potter is evident from the extremely controlled glaze at the foot rim. The foot rim is a joy to feel. Tokuda Yasokichi I (1873 - 1956) was a master potter credited for reviving the Kutani tradition in the early part of the 20th century. He originally studied painting under Kano Tanrei. The influence of the Kano school is especially apparently in this vase, with the large poppies seemingly dancing upon an unseen breeze. As a potter, he successfully reinvigorated and revived Kutani quality, reformulating old glazes and enhancing the Kutani tradition. He achieved the title of Living National Treasure in 1953.
