About the Item

An exceptional and rare example of an Edo period (c. 18th–19th century) Imari porcelain cup that resulted from a kiln misfire—transforming it into a unique sculptural object. Likely once part of a lidded cup set, the glaze has pooled and distorted slightly during firing, causing the lid to fuse at an angle and producing an organic, almost contemporary form. The surface features classic Imari underglaze blue decoration, now partly obscured or softened by the firing anomaly. The overall effect is both accidental and artistic—making this an evocative piece that transcends utilitarian function. Such kiln accidents were sometimes preserved for their unusual beauty and character. Period: Edo period, late 18th–early 19th century Origin: Arita or Imari kilns, Japan Material: Porcelain with underglaze blue decoration Condition: Misfired and fused during kiln process; stable and intact Appeal: A striking object of wabi-sabi sensibility and sculptural interest
