About the Item
A delightful vintage Japanese celadon glazed incense burner, koro, in teh form of a standing foo lion, shishi, or foo dog, Taisho to Showa Era, circa 1930, Japan.
The charming shishi stands nobly, head raised towards the sky, mouth open as if roaring. Its stocky body held up by four powerful legs with pawed feet. A luxurious and wavy mane flowing around its neck. And a short tail with a tufted end completes his proud look.
The lion is covered all over in a wonderful blue/green celadon glaze. The richness of the glaze especially apparent in the deeper recesses of the carved decoration where the glaze has pooled.
Crafted as a koro, or censer, the head is removable. The body cavity would originally be filled with sand or ash, and incense burned on top. When the head is placed back on, the smoke would escape through the mouth and eyes for a mysterious and evocative effect.
