About the Item
A charming and elegant vintage Japanese Kakiemon style oil jar or vase, Showa Era, circa 1960's or earlier, Japan.
The oil pot of standard form, with a squat comprised globular body set on a raised and recessed foot rim, with a short, narrow neck, and slightly everted mouth.
The body of the jar decorated with a traditional Kakiemon color palette with overglaze enamels of red, blue, green, and yellow, with gilt highlights, all against a pure white ground.
The design of the bottle is quite attractive, with a single tree in the foreground bearing fantastic flowers with gilt highlights. The tree rises from a rocky ground. A pair of birds fly overhead.
The underside with a "fuku" mark in red overglaze enamel.
Unlike most styles of Japanese decorative porcelain and pottery, Kakiemon is known for its restrained and somewhat asymmetrical designs with generous use of blank space.
Jars such as these were used by wealthy women to store cosmetic or fragrant oils, usually for the hair.
