About the Item

Prior to the 10th century, Chinese society eschewed raised seats in favor of mats. The rising popularity of chairs and other forms of elevated seating led craftsmen to adapt traditional cabinetry techniques to create the versatile luohan bed. A form of elevated seating that still accommodated mat posture, the luohan bed was used as both a place to rest and to gather with guests. This spirited 19th-century example has a finely-beaded railing with stepped panels, a tightly woven seat, and cabriole legs that Stand gracefully upon tapered feet. A uniquely Chinese furnishing, this luohan bed makes for an usual yet elegant addition to a living room or bedroom. Additional Dimensions: Seat height: 21.5" Apron to floor: 14.5".
